My QR code won't scan

Make a QR code that reliably scans: contrast, size, logos, and testing before you print.

Most scanning problems come down to the same few things.

If the code scans but shows "This link isn't available", the link or the QR code itself is paused or deleted. See My link isn't working.

Make it easier to read

  • Use strong contrast. Dark dots on a light background scan best. Very light dots, or dots and background that are similar colours, are hard to read.
  • Be careful with inverted colours. Light dots on a dark background (like the Midnight preset) work on many phones but not every scanner. Test it, or use a dark-on-light preset.
  • Don't overdo gradients. Keep both gradient colours dark enough against the background.
  • Keep the shapes readable. Very rounded or dotted styles can be harder for older scanners.
  • Keep any logo simple. Codes have built-in error correction, so a logo in the middle is fine, but very detailed or very dark logos can make scanning harder. If in doubt, remove it and test.
  • Leave space around it. Don't crop the empty margin, and don't place it against busy artwork.

Size and print quality

  • Print it large enough, at least a couple of centimetres wide, and larger if people will scan from a distance.
  • Use the PNG download at full size and don't stretch a small screenshot. For big print jobs use SVG if your plan includes it. See Design and export QR codes.
  • Avoid glossy or curved surfaces that reflect light.

Test before you print

  1. Save your QR code, then open it again with Edit and download the image.
  2. Scan it with two different phones.
  3. Check the page it opens is right.

Scans are counted as QR scans in your analytics, which helps you see it working. See Link and QR analytics.

Tip: If you change the colours later, download the new image and replace the old one. The old printed code still works, because editing doesn't change where it points.
