Create a short link

Turn a long web address into a short link, and choose a custom ending if your plan allows it.
  1. Open Links and choose New link.
  2. Enter the Destination URL. This must be a full web address, for example https://example.com/spring-sale.
  3. Optionally add a Title. Only your team sees it; it just helps you recognise the link.
  4. Optionally enter a Custom slug (see below).
  5. Choose Save.

You'll see "Link created." The link appears in your list with its short address underneath its name. Anyone who opens that short address is sent to your destination.

Note: You need the Create permission to make links. If you can't see New link, ask your team owner or a Team admin. See Roles and permissions.

Custom slugs

The slug is the ending of your short link. If you leave it blank, Shrtly generates a random one for you.

Custom slugs are available on plans that include them, and the field only appears if yours does. A custom slug:

  • must be between 4 and 32 characters long,
  • can use letters, numbers, dashes and underscores,
  • must not already be in use by anyone, or you'll see "The slug has already been taken."

Important: Some words are used by Shrtly itself (for example pricing, login and help), so those addresses can't work as short links. Choose something more specific.

Monthly limit

Each plan allows a set number of new links per calendar month, resetting at the start of each month. If you reach it you'll be asked to upgrade. See Hitting a plan limit and Plans and limits.
